I can’t help but gravitate towards dysfunction/chaos.

The need to flea/run/far from situations that become too heavily filled with complex emotions and ardent agendas is an urge that consumes my everyday thoughts/state of mind/spiritual/mental/physical peace.

In late 2012, former Minister of Culture of the Black Panther Party Emory Douglas met with Zapatistas and local artists in the Mexican state of Chiapas. The trip was initiated by Caleb Duarte from EDELO who describes the project as:

“A multimedia exploration of the artistic and political connections between the Black Panther Party and the Zapatista movements as incubated in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. To coincide with Emory Douglas’, the former Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party, residency in its space, EDELO (En Donde Era La ONU), a creative laboratory, will develop an art exhibition and single-issue newsletter. The exhibition will showcase pieces by local Zapatista artists and will explore their artistic identification with the Zapatista and Black Panther movements; the newsletter will pay homage to Douglas’ work in the Black Panthers’ popular press and will showcase new articles and artworks that will explore the connections between art and social movements as manifested in today’s multifaceted world.”

I initiated a conversation with my father two days ago. Even if it was only through text messaging, it was an attempt (made by me) to me reach out to him for the first time since, well since I can remember.

It was all very light and brief; me telling him about school, the tumultuous weather, current projects I’m pursuing, and him telling me about his life in Florida and the 70 degree weather they’ve been lucky enough to have for the past week or so.

It’s funny, once we get to this point in the conversation, the point where he’s exhausted the discussion of the initial topics one covers in an attempt to try to quickly catch up on another’s life after being absent for the majority of that persons life, the conversation fizzles and ultimately flat-lines.

I visited my mother’s house a few weekends ago to get away from all the noise and dysfunction I was experiencing. Upon my departure, she expressed her growing concern of estrangement with my father. She used words like, getting older, regrets, unresolved, anger and missed opportunities. It’s not like we haven’t had this conversation before, me and my mother I mean, but this time, this time something didn’t sit right with me.

Death has been on my mind much more often than usual these past few months.

I want to know that my father is out there in the same world that I am living in, surviving/finding peace/learning how to love himself. I want him to know that I am here, I have always been here, but I think that’s where it stops. The idea of letting a man into my life who I have never truly known, who ingrained in my memory as a a faint figure, a shape shifter of sorts. The one who comes and goes on a whim, who barrels back into your life as rapidly and furiously as a wind storm, leaving a vast trail of debris and chaos in the midst of his departure.

There are still so many things I want to tell me father like:

I have missing parts because of you
I used to hold Momma, squeeze her real tight after every arguement that used to be had
I know where you were all those late nights and early mornings
I know you hate women, that’s why you could never love me right
I know what you said to my brother when he came to you for help
I know you never made an effort to love your first daughter properly (does she ever cross your mind?)
I know how fragile you really are now
I know why you only date white women and why you’ll never marry again
I know you hit Momma
I still remember that time when I was four years old and you told me I didn’t have feelings, because I couldn’t possibly know what they were
